I often get asked "how do you do it with kids?" The truth is I don't really know...as a Mum you just do your best and get what needs to be done...done. Sometimes I don't do it very well. The house gets messy, the washing piles up, things get forgotten and sometimes we have 2 minute noodles for dinner.
What is shown on social media is a pretty and idealistic view and a small insight into my world as a small business Mumpreneur. Although I do work from home I quite often get "mum guilt" that I could be doing things better and spending more time fussing over my house and children. However when I look and my three cherubs I see happy, healthy and extremely independent young people, who I hope look up to me as a role model that anything is possible with hard work.
I have put together a bit of a list of the things that I do, that seem to take a little stress out of my life and help me keep on top of life with three children.
1. Take time out for yourself. (No guilt allowed)
It is so important for you to take time out for yourself. It helps recharge your batteries and stop that feeling of resentment that can creep in. We shouldn't feel guilty for looking after our mental and physical well being. We can't be good to anyone if we aren't looking after ourselves. For me it is things like getting my nails done, especially with the ladies of Glamour Nail Bar (Find them at https://www.glamournailbar.com.au), having a facial either at a salon or doing one myself at home, and catching up with my girlfriends for a fun night out. Exercise to me is so important. If your're time poor even a quick 20 minute walk or at home session while watching TV at night can do wonders.
2. Do small jobs before bed.
Mornings in our house can be a bit chaotic if things aren't organised the night before. Therefore I like to get as much as I can done before I go to bed at night. I like to make the kids lunches, wash all the dinner dishes and do a quick 5 minute tidy up of kids toys, shoes and clothes that seem to find themselves all over the house. It is so nice to wake up to these jobs being done and a tidy house.
This one follows on from the previous a little. I am a creature of habit. I like to know where I am going and what I am doing. I thrive on routine and so do my children. It makes the craziness of working form home a lot easier for both me and the kids if we do the same things at the same time each day. Find a routine that works for your family and try and stick to it. One routine we have that we always stick to is eating dinner together every night at the dinner table. At the end of our meal we all say what our "best and worst" part of our day has been. It is also a great way of hearing what is going on in your kids life.
4. Have a diary/calendar.
I used to rely on my Iphone diary. However with 4 people (including myself) to organise throughout the week to get to sports and meetings I have reverted to a wall calendar. I have a month view as I like to see everything as a whole. I have mine in the kitchen and every morning I check it to see where we all need to be that day. I also write a to-do list for each day so hopefully I don't forget anything for the day. I get a lot of pleasure crossing things off my list LOL
5. Find your tribe.
Having my tribe has kept me sane over the past few years and I believe has been one of the main reasons I have been able to succeed like I have. Their encouragement, support and sense of humour makes the hard days so much easier to bare and surprisingly I owe most if not all of these friendships to Instagram and The Perth Collective. So seek out your tribe. The people who share the same values and ethos as you and reach out to them. Either as part of a trade or collaboration. You never know where it will take you.
6. Switch off.
If you didn't already know, I am a bit of a social media addict. I wouldn't have the business I have today without it. It is such a valuable tool. On the downside though it also distracts me from not only my work but my home life. This is why recently I have "switched off" for a couple of hours morning and night. In the morning we don't have any technology on until we are all ready for school. And that includes me. We turn on the music and it is amazing the difference in the vibe in the house and how much more we all get done. At night it is a similar thing around dinner preparation time until everyone has had showers and in their pj's, and for me until all my lunch and dishes duties are done.
As women we need to stick together and help each other out. Strength in numbers. We need to be a little kinder to ourselves. All you can do is your best.
